Better, Smarter, Data-Driven Hiring
The number one coaching topic for business owners and executives is having difficult conversations. Oftentimes, these conversations are needed because a person is not a good fit for the position. Secondly, finding and hiring the right people is a concern of every business owner and executive.
During the aftermath of COVID and the Great Resignation, businesses are challenged to attract and retain good employees. Some hire people just to fill the ranks. As you well know, bad hires are costly on different levels.
How do we address this hiring issue? In my research, this is a data-driven solution that can be taken to improve the hiring process, which is why I started using PXT Select™ in my own business. PXT Select™, a Wiley brand, offers selection and employee assessment solutions that fill the gap between the resume and interview. Powered by the latest advancements in assessment technology, 20 years of research-validated tools provide actionable data about candidates in an easy-to-understand format that helps simplify and improve hiring processes. By identifying the most suitable candidates, organizations reduce turnover, boost employee engagement, and ultimately invest in improving their workplaces.
The assessment is broken into four sections. Each section specifically targets attributes of the candidate and job to see if they are a fit. First, it tells you if the candidate was deceptive in their responses. Second, it provides data on three key areas: thinking style (cognitive skills), behavioral traits, and interests. The results essentially tell you if the candidate can do the job, how they will do the job, and whether they are apt to enjoy the job. Third, the results provide examples of questions to ask and what to listen for in the candidate’s responses.
The process starts with selecting a performance model that depicts how people successfully perform in that role. Someone in your company completes a job analysis survey, which is uploaded into the performance model. Ideally, people in your company who successfully perform this role take PXT Select™ to validate the performance model and/or provide data to help refine the model. The goal is to refine that performance model so that it reflects what success in a particular job profile looks like in your company.
As a business owner, historically during our hiring process, we had conducted interviews and had two different skill-based exercises for each candidate to complete. While we had made some good hires, some were not. I wanted something better, and that’s when I used PXT Select™ for an hiring an administrative assistant. Going into the interviews, I had a particular candidate in mind who had a strong resume. This time the candidates also completed the PXT Select™ assessment. When I looked at the results, the candidate with a strong resume was well outside of the performance model in several areas. However, another candidate was very closely aligned with the performance model. I hired this candidate. She worked for us for 3+ years and performed very well. This made me a believer in PXT Select™.
Since then, I introduced a number of companies to PXT Select™. Their hiring process and results have been very successful. Some of the position profiles that I work with are truck drivers, helicopter and fixed-wing pilots, attorneys, and clothiers. PXT Select™ has made it easy with their extensive bank of performance models and data to draw from to help create the best and most realistic performance model for each position.
